Jerry - How I designed the perfect mid century extendable dining table

A beautiful kitchen or dining area isn’t complete until you find the perfect table. The place where you and I can sit, tell stories, share our day, and be present with warm coffee or heart-warming meals. That’s why I wanted to introduce you to Jerry, a dining table that brings mid century simplicity to the modern home.

Jerry – When I set out to design the perfect mid-century extendable dining table, I wasn't just crafting a piece of furniture; I was capturing the essence of a story that resonates deeply with many of us. That story is embodied in the Jerry Table, a tribute to an inspiring figure in my life—Jerry, an immigrant father of four who embodies the true meaning of family.

Jerry’s journey to Canada was marked by challenges and sacrifices, but his love for his children never wavered. He left behind everything familiar to build a better life for his family, facing the harsh realities of a new country with unwavering determination. The kitchen became the heart of his home, a place where love was shared through meals, stories, and laughter. But as his children grew older and brought their partners home for special occasions, Jerry’s four-seat dining table could no longer accommodate everyone. Despite this, his kindness and “family first” way of being meant that no matter how tight the space, everyone always felt welcome—even if someone had to take the couch.

Jerry’s life and love for his family had a profound impact on me and helped shape what Mim Concept stands for. His wisdom, thoughtfulness, and unwavering commitment to family are the values I wanted to capture in the design of the Jerry Table. I embarked on this project with Jerry in mind, aiming to create a table that not only exudes beauty and durability but also embodies the timeless nature of a father’s love.

The result is an extendable dining table that is as functional as it is elegant. With a design that allows it to be easily assembled by a 60-year-old father in less than a minute, the Jerry Table expands to accommodate the growing family that gathers around it. Its minimal and sleek design reflects the simplicity and resilience that Jerry lived by, while its durability ensures that it will last beyond a lifetime, just like the love it represents.

The Jerry Table is more than just a piece of furniture; it’s a tribute to all the fathers who, like Jerry, work tirelessly to keep their families close, no matter the challenges they face. With a wood that will last with memories that will be created with it, I also needed to allow our form to combine with function. It’s not just the beauty of the piece and building materials, it has to also be smart construction. Jerry allows to give you a table that “accommodates”. In every situation Jerry is nimble, a table setting for two for a date-night dinner quickly transforms, in under a minute, a place for Thanksgiving dinner where a bath of gravy can pass between eight pairs of hands. No one has to be left to lean over a plate on a couch trying to listen closely for the joke dad shares at the other end. Everyone has a place at the table with Jerry.

The divided top runner mechanism gives the power of two people to one. There’s no coaxing of a partner to grab another end and lifting heavy table sides to extend. Jerry unlocks using the tension jack lock system and in under a minute one person on one end of the table can extend easily for all.
